Tennis Tournaments in New Zealand
ASB Classic
The ASB Classic, sometimes referred to as the ATP/WTA Auckland Open, is a professional men's and woman’s open tennis tournament (genders are played in separate events), which debuted in 1956. The tournament has not always been a separate gender tournament but a joint men's and women's event until 1981. This tournament is part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series (men’s) and the WTA International Series (woman’s). It is held annually at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland during the month of January. This a week before the first grand slam of the tennis season, the Australian Open.
Junior Nationals
The first junior nationals event was created in 1886 by John Jardine who played for the Hawkes Bay Tennis Club. Representatives from many regions came to compete at this big event once every year. This event was originally based in Hawkes Bay then moved to Wellington. Nowadays the location of this event changes every so often. Different age groups ranging from under 12s, under 14s and under 16s would play in different locations usually between December or January each year.
Auckland Indoor ITF
Another popular tennis tournament that many juniors compete in is the Auckland Indoor ITF. The tournament is an ITF which means that it is open to any international tennis players. Because it is only played on 6 indoor courts, days tend to be longer. The Auckland Indoor ITF is normally scheduled each year in the first week of October at the Scarbo Tennis Centre in Auckland. Players participating in this tournament have the potential to earn ITF points. As a result of this, players have the potential to climb higher in their world junior ranking. Only tennis players aged between 13 to 18 are allowed to compete in this event.
